Open Farm Week 2020: Virtual Events

You don’t have to leave home to participate in Open Farm Week! This year, there are so many creative virtual options to choose from. From informational workshops to hands-on crafts, there’s an online event for everyone. Some are scheduled at specific times, while others you can simply tune in to at your leisure anytime during the week. So check out the list below and get ready - this will be an Open Farm Week for the books!

ANYTIME DURING OPEN FARM WEEK

Last Resort Farm | Virtual Farm Tour

Tour Last Resort Farm all week long on Instagram and Facebook. Each day a different member of the LRF crew will post pictures and information on what their days at the farm look like! Be sure to order some organic produce from their online store for pick up. Enjoy locally produced food while you learn about the very farm where it's grown!

Last Resort Farm | Virtual Garlic Braiding Workshop

Garlic braiding blends beauty, spice, and wellness! First, gather the garlic from your garden or pre-order a bundle from Last Resort Farm on their website for pick up (please note that garlic will be available starting in late July). Join Farmer Eugenie Doyle from home for a YouTube video tutorial on how to make a beautiful braid - it's weather and virus proof learning! You can access the video anytime during Vermont Open Farm Week. While you're ordering garlic, be sure to also purchase some of LRF's certified organic produce, jams, and pickles.

Vermont Grand View Farm | Farm Life Instagram Takeover

Different Goodling family members will take over the Vermont Grand View Farm Instagram account and give insights into farm life. You just might be surprised at what you learn! Be sure to follow them on Instagram and turn on your notifications so you don’t miss their virtual tour all week long! *August 10th - 15th

MONDAY - August 10th

Sugar Feather Farm | Lunchtime Live with Farmer Nicolle

Join Farmer Nicolle of Sugar Feather Farm as she goes live on Facebook on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday to share more about the rare, unique, and heritage types of fowl raised on the farm! Monday's topic is Sugar Feather Farm Background & Heritage Breed Fowl - learn more about how the family got involved with farming, heritage breeds of fowl, and what’s happening right now! Each Lunchtime Live will last for about 15 minutes.

Vermont Grand View Farm | Virtual Tour of Gotland Island, Sweden*

Join Kim and Chuck Goodling for a virtual tour of Gotland Island, Sweden, as they introduce you to the county of origin for their flock of Gotland sheep. You will learn about this amazing breed of sheep, the island's rich Viking history, the amazing regional landscape, and the many artists who call it home. Kim and Chuck have traveled to Gotland, Sweden several times to learn from the shepherds there about Gotland sheep. They also lead tours to Gotland for a full immersion into the Swedish agricultural life on the island. All participants must register prior to August 10th.

Strolling of the Heifers/Slow Living Summit | Virtual Tour with Green Mountain Girls Farm*

Slow Living Summit is partnering with Green Mountain Girls Farm to present a virtual farm tour during Vermont Open Farm Week! Pre-registration is required.

TUESDAY - August 11th

Sugar Feather Farm | Lunchtime Live with Farmer Nicolle

Join Farmer Nicolle of Sugar Feather Farm as she goes live on Facebook on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday to share more about the rare, unique, and heritage types of fowl raised on the farm! Tuesday's topic is Egg Factoids and Fun for Kids - Nicolle will share a variety of egg colors and explain how the colors come to be, the breeds they come from, and the sizes of the eggs! She will also share some super cool and fun facts you didn't know about eggs, as well as some silly fowl breeds - sure to be fun! Each Lunchtime Live will last for about 15 minutes.

Vermont Grand View Farm | Virtual Starting Your Sheep Farm Business Workshop*

Have you thought about starting your own sheep farm business? Do you already have a sheep farm and want to move from hobby farm to farm business? Join Kim Goodling, Shepherd, Teacher, and Consultant, for a virtual workshop on Starting Your Sheep Farm Business. Kim will cover three steps towards starting your farm business, setting goals, products to promotion, and identifying your ideal customer. Kim directs Vermont Farm School where she teaches and provides mentoring, business coaching, and consulting for other shepherds. Register in advance for this workshop.

THURSDAY - August 13th

Scott Farm Orchard | Virtual Hard Cider Tasting with Eden Specialty Ciders*

Eden Cider produces artisanal "harvest" ciders in Northern Vermont. Every year, Scott Farm Orchard grows and supplies Eden with the best heirloom apples to create their unique blends. For this virtual event, you will register with Eden Cider and pre-order a "tasting kit" (three 375ml bottles & a Scott Farm tasting glass). You will then join other people on Zoom for a guided tasting and discussion of three different artisanal hard ciders made by Eden with Scott Farm Orchard apples.

SATURDAY - August 15th
