2019 Open Farm Week Events in Southern VT

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9TH

 

Arlington Village Farmers Market, Arlington

Sugar on Snow at Arlington Village Farmers Market

4-7pm  | Visit the Arlington Village Farmers Market for Maple Day and learn all about maple syrup farming in Vermont. Free snow cones will be served, topped with real Vermont Maple Syrup, from their market vendors. The market includes many local products including handmade gifts, farm-fresh foods and produce, award-winning local cheeses from over thirty booths - come see why it's the most talked-about summer event in Arlington.

Silloway Maple Sugarhouse, Randolph

Pancake Supper at the Silloway Maple Sugarhouse

5-7pm | Bring the family for supper right in the Silloway Maple Sugarhouse where the maple syrup on your pancakes was made! The evening menu will feature pancakes, sausage, watermelon, and beverages. Enjoy a tour of the sugarhouse, take a hayride, pet the farm animals, and hike out to the sugarwoods to see the sap lines.

$8.00 for adults, children under 5 are free, inquire about the special $20 family rate. 

Smokey House Center, Danby

“Bulldog Bites” Food Truck & Summer Soiree at Smokey House Center at Smokey House Center

5:30 pm  | Come enjoy an evening at Smokey House Center. Support Burr and Burton Academy’s new food truck “Bulldog Bites”, which will feature menu options using Yoder Farm vegetables and Dorset Peak Jersey’s beef. Learn about the farmers that steward the land at Smokey House Center including the sugar bush, beehives and the community farm. Relax in a beautiful place, walk around the pond, enjoy a tour of their education garden and produce fields. 

Green’s Sugarhouse, Poultney

Green’s Sugarhouse Tour

10am - 4pm | Visit Green's Sugarhouse for a complimentary guided maple tour. Tours will start on the hour every hour taking guests from tree to table. Samples of Green's awarding-winning maple products will be provided at the end of each tour along with complimentary maple cotton candy! The sugarhouse gift shop will be open all day for those looking to take a little Vermont home with them.

Hathaway Farm & Corn Maze, Rutland

Family Fun at Hathaway Farm & Corn Maze

Challenge yourself to solve the Hathaway Farm "Kids & Kindness" Corn Maze using clues & GPS navigation if you'd like. Try to find all four bridges, the grassy knoll, and the siesta tent. For the little ones, the Mini Maze is a fun-filled, much shorter adventure featuring a story walk and garden bridge.

After your corn maze adventure, kids can enjoy the play area featuring John Deere Pedal Karts, the Giant Corn Pit, the Horse Stable Playhouse with bouncy cows and horses, water mists & much more. Also, be sure to visit the livestock barn to meet the friendly farm animals including donkeys, sheep, an extremely friendly goat named Louie, bunnies, guinea pigs, chickens, potbelly pigs named Petunia and Penelope, and their friendly cow named Flossie.

Scenic wagon rides will be offered at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:30pm on the weekend and at 4:00pm on weekdays.

$12.00 ages 12 and over, $10.00 ages 4-11 & seniors, ages 3 and under are free. This includes all activities on the farm.

Rebop Farm, Brattelboro

Rebop Farm Chore Tour

5-6pm  | Join Rebop Farm on their daily rounds to feed calves, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, pigs and more, move the fence for sheep, rotate cow pasture, watch bees collect pollen and nectar, and meet all the wonderful animals and farmers! Sturdy shoes, a hat, a water bottle, and a camera are suggested; footing can be uneven.

 

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10TH

Orchard Stroll at Scott Farm Orchard and Market

10-11am  | Join Orchardist Zeke Goodband for an informative and entertaining stroll through our heirloom orchards, otherwise not open to the public, to learn about the history of Scott Farm’s heirloom fruits, orchard ecology, how grafting was used to create the orchard, and to scout for pests and discuss how we manage them. The Orchard Strolls are part of Vermont’s 5th Annual Open Farm Week, a celebration of Vermont farms offering visitors a backstage pass to learn more about local food origins, authentic agritourism experiences, and the chance to build relationships with farmers.  No charge and no need to register for the strolls, please plan to gather in the parking area near the farm market.

Rebop Farm, Brattleboro

Burger Night at Rebop Farm

6pm  | Join us for a relaxed and fun night of grass-fed burgers at Rebop Farm! All proceeds will benefit our NOFA Share Fund, which helps subsidize CSA shares for lower-income Vermonters. We'll have lots of fresh sides from the garden, including inventive pickles, new potato salad, fresh salads, and a tasty dessert. $20.00 per person.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 13TH

Smokey House Center, Danby

Community Work Day and Tour Featuring Children’s Education Garden Activities at Smokey House Center

9am - Noon  | Smokey House Center Community Farm Project is growing food with and for the local community. Join them for their weekly scheduled Community Work Day from 9-11am for cultivation fun in the fields. In addition to Community Work Day hours, they will have garden activities planned for children in their Education Garden from 9:30-11am. Explore veggie life, hold a chicken, practice garden yoga and explore plant wonders. An informal tour of Smokey House Center will begin at 11 am. Visit their 5,000-acre land-base and learn about their Community Farm Project. No pre-registration is necessary. Gloves, tools and instruction will be provided for Community Work Hours. Rebop Farm, Brattleboro

Cheesemaking in the Farm Kitchen at Rebop Farm

4-6pm  This hands-on cheese making class using Rebop Farm's raw cow's milk is designed to be useful for adventurous home cooks and folks that want to buy directly from farmers! You'll make butter, ricotta, and mozzarella, and crème fraîche or yogurt if time permits.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 15TH

North Meadow Farm, Manchester 

North Meadow Farm On-Farm Experience With Cheese and Wine Tasting

4-7pm | North Meadow Farm produces grass-fed raw milk, meats, fresh cheese curds, artisan farmhouse cheeses, and fresh farm eggs.  Explore the farm, interact with the animals in the dedicated petting area, and enjoy samples of the cheeses they have made and aged on sight in their cheese cave paired with locally sourced wines.

Petting Farm Admission: $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for children, 3 and under are free

Smokey House Center, Danby

Fundamentals of Herbalism with Bruce Ketcham at Smokey House Center

5:30pm  | Have you ever wondered what a tincture is or a decoction or what the difference is between an essential oil and an infused oil?  If so, come and join us as we explore the fundamentals of herbalism at Smokey House Center. We’ll learn how to identify some common medicinal plants that grow abundantly in our backyard and how to make them into tinctures, infused oils, and decoctions!
